Men's Tennis Falls to No. 30 VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - The 34th-ranked NC State men's tennis team faced its sixth ranked opponent of the season on Saturday, falling to No. 30 Virginia Commonwealth, 5-2, at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Wolfpack lost the doubles point, before winning two matches in singles play. The 41st-ranked doubles duo of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber collected an 8-4 upset win over No. 37 Alexis Huegas and Dylan McCloskey at the No. 1 spot in the doubles lineup. Unfortunately for State, VCU would win the other two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Beck Bond and Austin Powell fell to Michael Voscek and Max Wennakoski, 8-2, while Robbie Mudge and Thomas Weigel came up short against Alejandro Argente and Jaime Vazquez, 8-5. In singles play, the Rams claimed wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots in the lineup to push their lead to 3-0. No. 14 Wennakoski defeated Mudge at No. 1, 6-4, 6-4, and No. 93 Huegas topped No. 125 Powell, 6-3, 6-2. Weigel responded by picking up the Pack's first win of the day over Claes Gorensson at the No. 3 spot, 7-6, 6-1, to make the score 3-1. The freshman remained undefeated in dual match singles play and is now 7-0 on the season. VCU clinched the match with a win at the No. 4 spot as Voscek downed Simon Norenius, 6-2, 6-2, advancing the team score to 4-1. Argente defeated Weber, 6-4, 6-1, while Bond defeated Vazquez, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot. Bond's win improved his season mark to 5-0 in dual match singles play.
