Feb. 23, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – The 35th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team defeated No. 37 UNC Wilmington, 5-2, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Saturday. The Wolfpack swept the doubles point, before winning four of six matches in singles play.
The Wolfpack came out with great energy and focus in doubles play. The 41st-ranked duo of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber claimed a huge upset win over UNCW’s eighth-ranked pair of Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The win improved the duo’s record to 13-5 on the season, including a 7-2 mark in dual doubles.
Robbie Mudge and Thomas Weigel claimed the doubles point for the Pack with an 8-5 win over Kaue Pereira and Michael Reilly at No. 3 doubles. Beck Bond and Austin Powell were trailing No. 45 Rafael Aita and Sam Williams, 7-4, when the point was clinched, so the match went unfinished.
State carried the momentum it built in doubles play over to singles, winning the first two matches to advance the team’s lead to 3-0. Thomson made quick work of Pereira in his return to the singles lineup from injury, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. No. 125 Powell followed by defeating Cooprider in a three-set decision, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
UNCW responded by winning the next two matches at No. 1 and 3 singles. Mudge dropped the first set to No. 17 Aita, 6-1, but regrouped to win the second set, 7-5. The two traded games throughout much of the third set, but Aita emerged victorious, 6-4. Weigel suffered his first loss of the season against Williams at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Weber clinched the match with his win at No. 5 singles against Blank. The Raleigh native won the first set, 7-5, before sealing the deal in the second set, 6-3. Bond defeated Pedro Mol at the No. 6 spot in the lineup, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, to give the Pack its fifth point of the afternoon.
NC State will have a long break before returning to action, when it opens ACC play at UNC on Friday, March 15 at 2:30 p.m.
