Pack Men's Tennis Wins ACC Opener At UNC, 6-1
March 15, 2013 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team opened conference play with a resounding 6-1 win at UNC Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Wolfpack claimed the doubles point, before winning five of six matches in singles play. The 12th-ranked doubles duo of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber collected the first win for the Pack, with an 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles against Esben Hess-Olesen and Maik Ulrich. The win improved the duo's record to 14-5 on the season, highlighted by an 8-2 mark in dual matches. UNC countered with a win at No. 2 doubles as Nelson Vick and William Parker defeated sophomores Beck Bond and Austin Powell, 8-5. The Wolfpack clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 3 doubles as Robbie Mudge and Thomas Weigel topped Brett Clark and Oystein Steiro, 8-6. NC State led the match, 1-0, after winning the doubles point. In singles play, Hess-Olesen evened the match score, 1-1, with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Mudge at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. State responded by winning the next five matches in singles to win the match, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Powell defeated 124th-ranked Clark, 7-6 (4), 6-2, while Bond earned the next win for the Pack to push the lead to 3-1. The sophomore won a tough match against Gores at six singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Thomson followed suit with a victory in his match at the No. 4 spot in the lineup against Parker, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (8). Weber and Weigel collected the final two victories on the day, with wins at the five and four spots in the lineup, respectively. Weber outlasted Steiro in a tough three-set match, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Weigel defeated Vick, the 110th-ranked player in the ITA polls, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
