RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis team suffered its first conference loss of the season to No. 24 Wake Forest, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium. The Wolfpack won the doubles point, but were unable to collect three wins in doubles play to seal the victory.
“We came out in doubles play and did a good job to claim the doubles point,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “We had a lot of opportunities to win the match, but we just didn’t capitalize. We missed some shots that we usually make and didn’t have the consistency that we usually have.”
The Demon Deacons (12-5, 1-1 ACC) took an early advantage in doubles play when their duo of Danny Kreyman and Adam Lee defeated Austin Powell and Beck Bond, 8-4, in the No. 2 spot.
The Wolfpack (7-6, 1-1 ACC) responded in the two remaining doubles contests with wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots in the lineup to clinch the doubles point. Thomas Weigel and Robbie Mudge collected an 8-6 victory over Sam Bloom and Jon Ho in the No. 3 spot, before the Pack’s 12th-ranked duo comprised of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber outlasted the 70th-ranked tandem of David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar, 8-4, in the No. 1 spot.
Thomson and Weber’s victory was their seventh-straight and improved their record to 15-5 overall and 9-2 in dual matches this season.
NC State took a 2-0 lead against Wake Forest after Powell made quick work of Kreyman, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot. The win was Powell’s third straight.
“Austin (Powell) played well from start to finish,” said Choboy. “He executed well and took advantage of his opportunities.”
Wake Forest countered with wins at the four and five spots in the lineup, as Ho collected a 7-5, 6-3 win against Weber in the No. 5 spot and Lee outlasted Thomson by the same count in the No. 4 spot to tie the match, 2-2.
The Demon Deacons pulled ahead in the overall match, 3-2, when Bloom closed out Bond, 7-5, 6-4, in the No. 6 spot, before Hopkins pulled out a tough three-set victory against Mudge on court one to clinch the overall match. Hopkins took the first set, 6-1, but Mudge countered with a 6-4 second-set win before falling 6-1 in the third set.
Wake Forest added another win at No. 2 singles, as the 56th-ranked Prabhakar outlasted Weigel, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The Wolfpack will make its second ACC road trip of the season when it travels to Clemson on Friday, Mar. 22, for a 3 p.m. match, before competing in Atlanta, Ga., against Georgia Tech on Sunday, Mar. 24 at noon.
