March 30, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis team earned its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the victory, the Pack improves to 12-7 on the season.
“The guys came out with great energy today,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “I think a couple of guys did a really nice job of stepping up today and answering the call which was good for our team.”
The Wolfpack swept the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match, claiming the opening point for the 14th time this season.
At the No. 2 position, the 36th-ranked tandem of Sean Weber and Nick Horton downed Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt and Cole Fiegel, 8-3. At the No. 3 spot in the order, the duo of Austin Powell and Thomas Weigel broke serve in the second game of the match and never looked back, defeating Will Showers and Colin Edwards, 8-1. The win sealed the doubles point for State.
At the top spot in the lineup, Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge captured their 14th victory of the dual season with an 8-7 (1) victory over the tandem of Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura. The win for Dempster and Mudge propelled them into the top 10 on the program’s all-time list for matches won by a doubles team in a dual season.
In singles, the Pack claimed the first two matches to increase its lead to 3-0. At the top spot in the order, Powell used a late break to win the first set Segura, 6-4, before cruising in the second set to win the match, 6-4, 6-1. Powell earned his team-leading 22nd win of the season with the victory.
Meanwhile, Norenius cruised in his match at the fourth position with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Benito of the Yellow Jackets. With the win, Norenius earns his fourth ACC victory of the season, including his fourth straight.
“I thought Simon [Norenius] did a really nice job in singles,” Choboy said. “He managed to dig down and stay ahead of his guy and didn’t give him any momentum.”
A native of Bocholt, Germany, Weigel clinched the match for State, as he outlasted Fiegel at the third position, 7-6 (5), 7-5. The win for Weigel is his 16th of the season.
“Thomas coming back in that first set from behind was big for us,” Choboy said. “I think that’s big for him.”
At the fifth position, Horton recorded his 15th victory of the year, as he overmatched Showers of Georgia Tech, 6-1, 6-1. Parker McGuiness also added his third straight ACC victory with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Edwards of Georgia Tech.
Mudge won the first set in his match against Rakitt, 6-4, but ultimately would fall in a decisive third set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Pack will continue its four-match homestand against Boston College on Friday, April 4. First serve for the match is slated for 4 p.m.
