Wolfpack Earn 6-1 Victory Over Boston College
April 4, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe Boston College Friday afternoon at the Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Wolfpack improves to 13-7 on the season and 2-5 in conference action.
"Today was a good win for our guys," said head coach Jon Choboy. "It was pretty windy out there, so play was sloppy at times. Once the wind died down a bit, the quality of play went up pretty good. We've got to do a little better job of being sharper mentally and closing out matches."
State swept the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, claiming the opening point for the 16th time this season.
At the No. 2 position, Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel won five of the first six games of their match against BC's duo of Jonathan Raude and Alexandre Thirouin to cruise to an 8-2 win. At the top position, Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster won their 15th victory of the spring, 8-6, against the team of Matt Wagner and Aiden McNulty to seal the doubles point for State. With the win, Mudge and Dempster are now in eighth in the program record books for wins by a doubles team in the spring season.
"Doubles was sloppy because it was the windiest part of the day and that made it difficult for both sides," Choboy said. "We had a couple of different teams out there, but I thought they did a good job of getting through it."
State completed a sweep at the No. 3 position, as Simon Norenius and Parker McGuiness was able to break serve to take a 7-6 lead in their match against Hank Workman and Kyle Childree. Norenius was then able to serve out the match to clinch the 8-6 victory.
A native of Plano, Texas, Dempster earned the first ACC victory of his career in singles action, as he extended the Wolfpack advantage to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Christian McKean at the No. 6 spot in the order.
Horton would earn his 16th victory of the season from the fourth position with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wagner of the Eagles.
Playing at the No. 2 position for the first time in his collegiate career, Norenius sealed the team victory for the Wolfpack, as he defeated McNulty, 6-4, 6-3. The sophomore now owns 18 victories on the campaign and has won each of his last five matches.
At the top spot in the order, Mudge earned a straight-set, 6-3, 6-4, win over BC's Raude, while Weigel picked up a victory over Workman at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4). McGuiness dropped the lone match of the day for the Wolfpack from the No. 5 position, as he was edged in a third-set tiebreak, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (11-9).
Up next, the Pack will play its final home match of the dual season against No. 12 Notre Dame on Sunday, April 6. First serve is set for 1 p.m. and the seniors will be honored prior to the match.
