Men's Tennis Falls to No. 1 Virginia

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis team fell to the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Tennis Stadium.
The Wolfpack (12-8, 5-3 ACC) trailed, 1-0, after doubles play as the Cavaliers (17-0, 6-0 ACC) were able to win all three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Pack sophomores Beck Bond and Austin Powell fell to Virginia’s 31st-ranked team of Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. The deciding match came at the No. 2 spot where the Cavaliers captured the point with a win as the Wolfpack duo of Robbie Mudge and Thomas Weigel were defeated by UVA’s ninth-ranked combo of Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank, 8-5.
In singles play, the Cavs' Domijan, the nation's top-ranked player, defeated Thomson, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, while No. 39 Ryan Shane topped Weigel, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Virginia’s Frank, ranked 27th, downed Mudge, 6-1, 6-4, and No. 16 Styslinger outlasted Weber, 6-3, 6-4, at the five spot in the lineup.
Bond and Powell forced their matches to a third set, before falling in the final frame. Powell won the opening set, 6-4, against Jenkins, the country's No. 2-ranked player, but dropped the second set, 6-1. In the final frame, Jenkins prevailed, 6-2, to claim the win. Bond lost the first set of his match at No. 6 singles to No. 72 Harrison Richmond, 6-3, but fought back to win the second set, 6-4. Richmond emerged victorious in the third set, 6-2, to defeat Bond.
NC State will return to action when it travels to Boston College Friday, April, 12 for a 3 p.m. tilt.
