Wolfpack Concludes Weekend with 4-3 Win at No. 42 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NC State men’s tennis team completed its weekend of play with a 4-3 victory at No. 42 Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. With the victory, the Wolfpack improves to 14-8 on the season.
Virginia Tech opened the match by winning the doubles point. At the No. 2 position, the duo of Nick Horton and Sean Weber dropped the first match of the day against Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro, 8-5, while the Hokies clinched the opening point from the No. 3 spot as Jai Corbett and Nic Wilson defeated Simon Norenius and Austin Powell, 8-5.
In singles, Dempster earned a win at the No. 5 position to even the score at 1-1, as he defeated Corbett, 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile, the Hokies regained the lead after Monteiro posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Simon Norenius at the No. 3 position.
A native of Sydney, Australia, Horton evened the score once more with a straight-set 6-3, 7-6 win over Corbett from the fourth position. From the No. 6 spot in the order, Weber gave the Wolfpack its first lead of the day with a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win against Aaron Gomez.
In his match at the No. 2 position, Mudge dropped the first set against Bjerrehus, 4-6, but responded by taking the second set, 6-1. In the decisive third set, Mudge came from behind to seal the team victory with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win. Mudge captured his 22nd victory of the season with the win.
Contini took the final match of the afternoon from the top spot of the order with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 victory against Powell.
Up next, the Pack will conclude its regular season at Wake Forest on Saturday, April 19. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
