Pack Falls to No. 9 UNC in ACC Championship Quarterfinals

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 26 NC State men’s tennis team was defeated 4-0 in its quarterfinal match against third-seeded and ninth-ranked North Carolina Friday evening at the 2014 ACC Men’s Tennis Championships. The match was moved into the Sheffield Tennis Center on the campus of Duke University following a rain delay that lasted a little more than four hours. With the loss, State falls to 17-9 on the season.
The Wolfpack dropped the doubles point for just the seventh time this season, as UNC posted wins at the No 1 and No. 2 positions.
At the No. 1 position, the duo of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster dropped their match against UNC’s Brayden Schnur and Brett Clark, 8-5, while the pair of Sean Weber and Nick Horton was edged at the No. 2 spot in the order by Oystein Steiro and Nelson Vick, 8-7 (4).
In singles, the Tar Heels extended their lead to 2-0, as Dempster was defeated by Vick, 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, Mudge was defeated at the top spot in the lineup by 12th-ranked Schnur of UNC, 6-3, 6-3.
At the No. 3 position, Horton was defeated by Clark in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, as the victory from Clark sealed the team victory for North Carolina.
At the No. 2 spot in the order, Powell was up a break against Schneider in a decisive third set, 3-2, prior to the match being clinched. At the No. 4 spot in the order, Norenius forced a third set by winning a tiebreak in the second set and was tied in the decisive set against Steiro, 1-1, before the match was left unfinished, 0-6, 7-6 (4), 1-1. Weber was also in a decisive third set at the No. 5 position against Murray before his match was abandoned at 6-3, 5-7, 3-4.
