Wolfpack Advances Past Oregon, 4-2, at NCAA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 26 NC State men's tennis team advanced to the Round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships with a 4-2 victory over No. 44 Oregon Saturday afternoon at University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. With the win, the Wolfpack improves to 18-9 on the season.
The Pack opened the match by capturing the opening doubles point for the 20th time this season with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions.
The tandem of Austin Powell and Simon Norenius earned the first victory of the day for NC State in a tightly contested match that went into a tiebreak against Oregon's Jayson Amos and Daniel Sardu. Norenius and Powell were able to win five of the first six points in the tiebreak before going on to claim an 8-7 (3) win.
At the No. 2 position, Nick Horton and Sean Weber went up a break in their match against Joey Swaysland and Daan Maasland at 4-2. The pair would add a second break four games later to go up a second break, 7-3. Weber would serve the match out one game later and the pair claimed an 8-3 win to seal the opening point for the Wolfpack.
In singles, Powell increased the NC State lead to 2-0 from the No. 2 position, as he defeated Farin, 6-4, 6-4. The junior was able to break Farin's serve to win the final game in each set and now owns 24 victories this season.
The Ducks answered by claiming each of the next two matches. Norenius dropped his match at the fourth spot of the order against Sardu, 6-3, 6-4, while Weber fell to Amos, 6-4, 6-3.
A native of Sydney, Australia, Horton regained the lead for the Pack. He was able to capture the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4). In the second frame, the freshman was able to break serve to take a 5-3 advantage before holding serve to win the match over Oregon's Maasland, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
At the No. 6 position, Weigel was able to come from behind after dropping the first set to defeat Swaysland, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The win from Weigel sealed the team win for State and sent the squad to the tournament's Round of 32.
At the top position, Mudge was in the third set of his match against Campier before it was left unfinished, 3-6, 6-4, 5-6.
Up next, the Pack will face Georgia on Sunday, May 11. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
