    Powell Falls in NCAA Singles Championship

    ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Austin Powell of the NC State men’s tennis team saw his season come to an end Wednesday afternoon, as he was defeated by Jonny Wang of Southern California, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Singles Championship.

    In the first set, Powell was able to break Wang’s serve to take a 3-1 lead, but Wang was able to win the next four games to go up a break and take a 5-3 lead.  Wang served out the set two games later to win the first frame, 6-4.

    Wang opened the second set by winning the first four games to take an early 4-0 advantage. However, Powell battled back by taking three of the next four games before Wang ultimately won the match, 6-4, 6-3.

    Powell concludes his season with a team-best 24 victories, including five against nationally ranked opponents.

    The doubles portion of the tournament is set to get underway on Thursday with the tandem of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster to play Baylor’s duo of Patrick Pradella and Mate Zsiga at 5:30 p.m.
