Dempster and Mudge Fall in NCAA Doubles Round of 16

ATHENS, Ga. – The tandem of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster of the NC State men’s tennis team saw their run come to an end Friday afternoon in the Round of 16 of the 2014 NCAA Doubles Championship. The No. 29 Wolfpack tandem dropped a hard-fought, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5) match against Cal’s No. 28 pair of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton.
The match opened with the two teams each holding serve for the first 10 games of the match and deadlocked at 5-5. Mudge and Dempster were able to get the first break of the match to take a 6-5 lead before Dempster served out the set one game later, 7-5.
In the second set, the Cal duo of Bayane and Melton was able to break first in the set to take a 3-1 lead. Bayane and Melton went on to force a decisive third set by taking the second frame, 6-2.
In the third and decisive third set, the two teams each held serve for the first eight games of the frame before Mudge and Dempster were able to go up a break, 5-4. However, Bayane and Melton were able to break back the next game to extend the match, 5-5. After each team held serve to send the match to a tiebreak, the Cal duo prevailed in a tightly contested tiebreak to win the match, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Dempster and Mudge conclude the season as one of the top tandem’s in NC State men’s tennis history, as the pair recorded 20 victories throughout the spring season to sit in a tie atop the program record books with Andy Andrews and Mark Dillon.
