CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Junior Robbie Mudge and freshman Nick Horton advanced to the semifinals of the UVa Ranked + 1 Invitational on Friday, as the NC State men's tennis team posted a strong start on day one, recording eight overall victories.

“Today, we wanted to close out some of these matches when we got into third sets and I think we did that,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “We had more three set wins today than we lost and we did well in tiebreakers.”

All five members of the Wolfpack were able to advance to the quarterfinals, with Mudge and Horton advancing in the blue draw to the semifinals for the second consecutive tournament.

A junior from Winston Salem, N.C., Mudge captured a thrilling three-set victory over 118th-ranked Alex Petrone of Michigan, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, in the first round, before defeating Wake Forest’s third-seeded Adam Lee, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Mudge will play Elon’s Cameron Silverman in Saturday’s semifinals.

Horton continued his strong start to his rookie season with a 2-0 performance on the day, highlighted by a straight set win over UNC’s Brett Clark, 6-3, 7-5. He will face No. 46 Ryan Shane of UVa in the semis.

Senior Sean Weber, junior Austin Powell and sophomore Simon Norenius each recorded a 1-1 ledger for the day in their respective draws. Norenius recorded an upset in the quarterfinals of the orange draw over No. 51 Harrison Richmond of Virginia, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, the duo of Weber and Mudge was impressive with a quarterfinal victory over Binghamton's pair of Shidharta Hazarika and Ismael Dinia. 8-5, while the duo of Horton and Weigel fell, 9-8, to Louisville’s Albert Wagner and Alex Gornet.

“We saw some good things out of both teams,” Choboy commented.

Play will resume Saturday with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles, beginning at 9 a.m.
