TULSA, Okla. – Junior Austin Powell of the NC State men's tennis advanced to the final stage of the singles qualifying draw on Tuesday at the 2013 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Ranked No. 96 in the ITA preseason rankings, Powell outlasted David Holiner of Texas in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-5, in the second round of the qualifying singles draw. Powell will face Chris Helliar of UAB in the third round for the opportunity to earn one of the 16 remaining spots in the main draw.
In the consolation singles draw, freshman Nick Horton forced a decisive third set, but ultimately was edged in his match against No. 106 Arnau Dachs of TCU, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
After receiving a first round bye in the qualifying doubles draw, the Pack’s 12th-seeded duo of senior Sean Weber and Horton overwhelmed Louisville’s Alex Gornet and Albert Wagner, 8-3. Horton and Weber, the 49th-ranked pair in the ITA’s preseason rankings, is slated to face Tulsa’s team of Japie De Klerk and Matt Kirby in Wednesday’s third round of qualifying.
