CARY, N.C. – Five representatives of the NC State men’s tennis team advanced to the singles round of 32 on Thursday, as play opened at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships at Cary Tennis Park. Overall, the Wolfpack recorded 12 victories on the day.
“I think there were a lot of good things that happened today,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “We won a couple of three setters and have five guys still in the main draw, which is good. I thought we were pretty competitive all the way around.”
Coming off an impressive showing at the ITA All-Americans two weeks ago, junior Austin Powell captured two straight set victories on Thursday. In the first round, the Muscle Shoals, Ala., native defeated Campbell’s Rik van Gerwen, 6-3, 6-0, while the junior cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Gardner-Webb’s Nikita Zverkov in the second-round of action.
Sophomores Thomas Weigel and Simon Norenius each picked up two wins in Thursday’s action. After defeating Campbell’s Jean-Marc Krone, 6-2, 6-3, in the opening round, Norenius outlasted Clemson’s Dominique Maden in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-2, in the second round of play. Weigel picked up his first victory of the day in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, against Sam Williams of UNC Wilmington, before earning a hard fought win against Sam Bloom of Wake Forest, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to punch his ticket into the round of 32.
As the tournament’s 15th-seed, junior Robbie Mudge outlasted Winthrop’s Ramon Simonetti, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, in his morning match, before picking up a straight set win against Daniel Strawn of Clemson, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Beck Bond also advanced to the round of 32 after earning two straight-set victories. Bond, a native of Meriden, Conn., overwhelmed Winthrop’s Corey Decandia, 6-2, 6-1, before picking up the win against Garik Yedigarian of Coastal Carolina, 7-5, 6-1.
Play will continue Friday at Cary Tennis Park with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
