Men's Tennis Claims Two Doubles Wins at Regionals

CARY, N.C. - NC State men's tennis team claimed two wins on Friday in doubles play at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships. The Wolfpack also claimed a win in singles play.
In doubles play, Austin Powell and Thomas Weigel downed UNC Charlotte's Alex Calott and Paul Cisti, 8-5. Dave Thomson and Sean Weber were also victorious in their first match, defeating UNC Asheville's Adrien Langeard and Matthew Waissen, 8-6. Simon Norenius and Rafael Paez dropped an 8-6 decision to Jordan Kaufman and Brian Kowalski of Eon.
Powell, ranked No. 125 nationally, followed up his great play on Thursday with another impressive showing on Friday. The Pack sophomore defeated UNC Wilmington's Kosta Blank in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (3). The second match of the day for Powell pitted him against Chris Mengel of Duke, ranked No. 19 nationally. Powell dropped the decision 6-4, 7-5. In the opening match of the day for Paez, the junior fell to Adam Lee of Wake Forest, 6-4, 6-2.
In the consolation bracket, Weigel defeated Paul Cisti of UNC Charlotte, 6-2, 6-3, before dropping his second contest of the day to UNC's Oystein Steriro, 6-2, 7-6 (2). Norenius dropped his match to Taylor Meyer of UNC, 6-2, 6-3.
Doubles play will begin on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. All of the Pack's players, have been eliminated from competition in singles play.
