Men's Tennis Boasts Four Players in ITA Singles Rankings

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis team was listed No. 35 in the first poll of the 2014 campaign, released Thursday afternoon by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Wolfpack boasts four players ranked among the top-125 players in the country in the singles rankings, as well as two of the top-60 doubles teams in the nation.
As a team, State will open the season ranked 35th, as the squad returns seven student-athletes from last season and will add four freshmen to the lineup. The Pack concluded the 2012-13 campaign with a 14-11 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Junior Austin Powell leads the way in the singles rankings for the Pack with a No. 50 listing. A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Powell posted a team-best 10 victories throughout the fall, including three victories against ranked opponents.
A product of Winston-Salem, N.C., junior Robbie Mudge will begin the dual season ranked 76th after posting a 9-4 record in the fall, including an appearance in the semifinals of the ITA Carolina Regional.
After posting two victories against ranked opponents throughout the fall season, sophomore Thomas Weigel is listed No. 82, while freshman Nick Horton begins his first collegiate dual season ranked 83rd.
State is also represented in the rankings by two doubles teams, including senior Sean Weber and Horton listed at No. 19. The duo of Weber and Mudge is ranked 54th after playing to a 10-2 record in the fall. The tandem advanced to the doubles final in three tournaments, including the ITA Carolina Regional.
NC State will open the spring portion of its schedule by participating in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup and will host the Wolfpack Invite. Both tournaments are scheduled to be played Jan. 10-12.
