RALEIGH, N.C. - The 35th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team will open dual season competition on Saturday, Jan. 18, when it faces UNC Greensboro and NC Central in a doubleheader. The Wolfpack will start play at 10 a.m. against the Spartans, before competing against NCCU at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

“It’s a good opportunity to play a couple of dual matches in front of our home crowd,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “It allows our young guys to understand the difference in a dual match, as opposed to playing just regular singles and doubles events in the fall. Hopefully, the dual competition will allow the guys to feel that energy from court to court.”

State is looking to build off the success from last weekend’s Wolfpack Invite, which saw the squad go a combined 17-1 throughout the tournament in singles competition. The tournament was highlighted by the play of 50th-ranked Austin Powell, who was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday. The junior finished the tournament with a 2-0 singles record and 3-1 doubles record.

State will face UNC Greensboro for the 15th time in school history when the programs square off on Saturday. The Pack leads the all-time series against the Spartans, 14-1, and won the most recent contest, 7-0, in Raleigh during the 2012 campaign.

NC State’s match against NC Central will be the second all-time meeting between the two schools, as the Wolfpack won the first contest held in Raleigh, 7-0, in 2010

Sophomore Simon Norenius and freshman Parker McGuiness will travel to compete in the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. The tournament, which will be played Jan. 17-19, in Palm Springs, Calif., will feature singles and doubles competition, which will be played outdoors.

“It’s our first time competing out there,” Choboy said. “It should be a good opportunity to get those guys some experience against some very good players. We’re looking forward to seeing how that goes.”
