Men's Tennis to Open Season on Saturday
Raleigh, N.C. - Head coach Jon Choboy and the NC State men's tennis team will begin the 2007 spring season tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 20, with three home matches inside the friendly confines of the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Pack will take on High Point (10 a.m.), Gardner-Webb (2 p.m.) and the Citadel (6 p.m.) in a marathon of opening day activity.
"This is the day that we have been waiting for since we fell to Boise State at the NCAA Tournament to end last season," said Choboy. "Our veteran guys have that much more experience and maturity, and our newcomers offer us another level of talent. We're ready to continue to work hard and represent NC State like the first-class university and program that it is."
Choboy, who will begin his fifth season at the helm of the program, has taken the Pack from its lowest point in school history and resurrected it back into national prominence. Last season the red and white went 20-11, collecting the most wins in a season in school history, and made the NCAA Tournament field for the first time since 1999. The Pack ended last year with a No. 40 national ranking.
NC State enters this season with a No. 37 national ranking, its best mark ever at the start of the year. Junior Nick Cavaday (No. 99) and sophomore Jay Weinacker (No. 100) are also ranked in singles play, marking the first time in school history that two players have been ranked in singles at the same time.
Aside from serving as opening day for the Pack, Saturday will also mark the beginning of the season for all three of NC State's competitors. The Citadel's James Eason and Daniel Dossetor stand as the only ranked duo coming to Raleigh this weekend. The Bulldog pair is currently ranked No. 20 nationally in doubles play.
Match recaps and complete scores will be available following each of the Pack's three contests on GoPack.com shortly following the completion of each competition. Stay tuned to GoPack.com for all the latest news, updates and features on Wolfpack men's tennis.
