Jan. 24, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. - The 34th-ranked NC State men's tennis team is set to compete in the sixth annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend. The Wolfpack will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to battle No. 30 VCU, No. 49 Michigan State, and host No. 6 Tennessee for a spot in next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held from Feb. 14-17 in Houston, Texas.
"It's going to be a fun weekend," said head coach Jon Choboy. "We'll be playing some good competition with VCU, Tennessee and Michigan State. It's going to be a really good test for us, as we're beginning a tough stretch with several very good, competitive matches. We've worked really hard for a long time. Hopefully, we can put into play what we've been working on."
Last time on the courts, NC State opened its season 2-0 with victories against UNC Greensboro and NC Central on Saturday. The Pack was able to sweep the doubles point in each respective match and win all 12 singles matches in straight sets that were played throughout the day.
The Wolfpack will begin the weekend Saturday by facing No. 30 VCU in a match slated to get underway at 2 p.m. VCU comes into Saturday's match the holder of a 4-1 record, as the squad dropped a 5-2 decision to North Carolina in its last outing. The Pack owns a 4-5 all-time ledger against the Rams. The two teams most recently met last season, as State fell to VCU in Richmond, Va., by a score of 5-2.
The winner of the NC State and VCU match will play the winner of the Tennessee and Michigan State match on Sunday for a spot in next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The losers of each match will also meet in a consolation match on Sunday as well.
"It's a great opportunity for us and we're really looking forward to it," Choboy said. "I think the guys are excited about it. They want to get out and play."
