Jan. 31, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team will face a tough challenge on Friday, Feb. 1, when it hosts the 34th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The two teams are evenly matched as the Wolfpack is ranked 35th in the country, according to the latest ITA Tennis rankings.
The Wolfpack enters the contest with a record of 3-1 in dual matches, while the Wildcats are 6-1. NC State holds the edge in the series, 3-1, with the Pack taking the last meeting, 7-0, at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill., on Feb. 25, 2012.
State is coming off of a strong performance at the 2013 ITA Kick Off Weekend, where Jon Choboy's squad defeated then 36th-ranked Louisville, before falling to No. 12 Ole Miss. The win against the Cardinals was the second victory of the season against a higher ranked opponent, with the first win against then No. 22 Indiana.
Underclassmen have led the way for the Wolfpack up to this point in the season as four of the six players in the singles lineup are sophomores and freshmen. Austin Powell, a sophomore from Muscle Shoals, Ala., headlines the group playing at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
Northwestern suffered its first loss of the season in its last outing against the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils. Prior to the loss, the Wildcats started the season on a six match winning streak. The Cats are led by junior Raleigh Smith, who ranks as the 108th best player in the country by the ITA.
