Men's Tennis to Host Three Matches this Weekend
Feb. 6, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. - After a successful two-week road trip, the NC State men's tennis team will return to the friendly confines of the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center to play three matches this weekend. The Wolfpack will host No. 33 VCU on Friday, Feb. 7th at 3 p.m., before welcoming No. 26 South Carolina at 1 p.m. and Longwood at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9.
"We're looking forward to playing at home for the first time in a couple of weeks after a successful road trip," said head coach Jon Choboy. "Having this opportunity to get the next several matches in our building will be exciting for us and our fans."
The Wolfpack is coming off a road trip where the squad picked up a pair of 4-3 victories against Big Ten foes Indiana and Michigan last weekend. Junior Austin Powell continued his strong start to the dual season by clinching both matches from the top position of the singles lineup.
State will face VCU for the second time this season on Friday, as the Rams picked up the 4-3 victory in Knoxville, Tenn., at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Rams are listed No. 33 in the latest ITA team rankings and hold a 7-2 ledger. VCU holds a slim lead in the all-time series. The last time the two teams played in Raleigh, the Pack defeated the Rams, 6-0, on Feb. 29, 2012.
South Carolina heads to Raleigh with a No. 26 listing in the polls and a 5-2 overall record for the season. The Gamecocks hold the advantage in the all-time series and won last year's meeting in Columbia, 4-3. State last defeated South Carolina, 5-2, on Feb. 11, 2012 in Raleigh.
Longwood comes to Raleigh with a 1-3 overall record for the season. Sunday's match will mark the first match in the history of the two programs.
Sunday's 1 p.m. match against South Carolina will be a "minute event" for the Student Wolfpack Club, as students will be able to swipe their ID's for future sporting events. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match, as part of the Play 4Kay initiative to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Fans are urged to park in the West Deck, which can be accessed off of Varsity Drive.
