No. 40 M. Tennis Blanks Norfolk State 7-0
Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 40 NC State men's tennis team earned its fifth 7-0 sweep of the year in a win over Norfolk State on Saturday, March 13. Earlier in the day head coach Jon Choboy tallied his 100th career win at NC State in a 5-2 victory against No. 53 William & Mary.
"I actually didn't know until Jay Weinacker reminded me when he was driving to come see the 100th win," said Choboy. "I'm happy but to see the way the guys fought today was more rewarding."
The doubles point went in the Wolfpack's favor. Due to the Spartans not fielding a No. 3 doubles team, the win was awarded to Akash Gujarati and Rafael Paez by default. David Chermak teamed with Will Rollinson at No. 2 to take down Keenan Ruff and Jonathan Sessom, 8-3. With the point decided Rob Lowe and Frideric Prandecki lost 8-4 to Aresnio Culver and Ben Marks.
In singles, Prandecki was the first to get a win, by beating Ruff 6-1, 6-0. Rollinson earned his first spring single victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dexter McDowell. Fernando Banos defeated Marks easily, 6-2, 6-1.
Chermak took down Sessom in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Gujarati closed out the day by coming from behind in a 2-6, 6-4, (10-8) win over Culver. The No. 6 singles was not played due to Norfolk State not fielding enough players.
The Wolfpack moves to 10-2 on the year, which matches last years win total. NC State travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Monday, March 15 to take on No. 30 North Carolina at 3:00 p.m. This will be the first ACC match of the season for the Pack.
"We're showing signs of getting better," said Choboy. "We're looking forward to going over there and competing."
