April 29, 2014
INDIANAPOLIS - The NC State men's tennis has been selected to compete in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship field, as announced Tuesday evening by the NCAA. The Wolfpack will face No. 49 Oregon in the first-round of the tournament in the Athens Regional hosted by the University of Georgia.
The Wolfpack received the No. 2 seed in the Athens regional and will be joined by host and No. 10 Georgia, third-seeded Oregon and Jacksonville State. The Pack has faced Oregon one other time in program history while facing Georgia on six occasions. State and Jacksonville State have never faced each other on the tennis courts.
The Pack makes its seventh overall NCAA appearance, including its fifth under the guidance of head coach Jon Choboy. For the first time in the history of the program, State will compete in the NCAA Championships in three consecutive seasons dating back to the 2012 campaign. In the program's history, State has recorded four victories in the tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2008.
The Ducks head to Athens, Ga., with a 17-9 record this season and a No. 49 listing in the latest ITA poll. NC State and Oregon have faced one common opponent this season in Duke, as the Blue Devils defeated the Ducks, 4-1 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Pack was one of nine ACC schools to make the field of 64 teams.
First round action from the Athens Regional is slated to take place from May 10-11. The NCAA Championships are also scheduled to be held in Athens this season from May 16-20.
