April 30, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS - The NC State men's tennis team has been selected to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship field and will face Auburn in the first round, announced Tuesday by the NCAA. The match will be played at 1 p.m. ET Friday, May 10, in Norman, Okla., at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of host Oklahoma.
NC State (13-10) and Auburn (13-10) will be meeting for the fifth time in program history, with NC State holding a 3-1 edge in the series. It will be the first matchup between the teams since 1983 when the Wolfpack defeated the Tigers, 5-4.
The Wolfpack makes its sixth overall and fourth NCAA appearance under head coach Jon Choboy. In his 11th season at NC State, Choboy also led the Pack to the tournament in 2006, 2007 and 2012. State also made the tournament in 1978 and 1999. The Pack has collected three wins in the NCAA tournament.
"I'm very excited about making the NCAA Tournament, especially for the guys," said Choboy. "We're really excited about going out to Oklahoma and playing some teams that we haven't seen this year. Our recent success shows that our program is heading in the right direction after back-to-back trips to the tournament and I think we can do really well in Oklahoma."
The Tigers finished 10th in the SEC with a 5-7 record and lost, 4-1, to Vanderbilt in the first round of the SEC Tournament. Auburn and NC State played five common opponents during the regular season, with both teams collecting victories over Georgia Tech and Indiana, while each came up short against Ole Miss and South Carolina. The final common opponent was Clemson in which the Pack won 4-2 during the regular season and lost by the same margin in the ACC Championship. Auburn lost a 5-2 decision to Clemson.
NC State is one of seven teams to make the field from the ACC.
The winner of the first round matchup will advance to the second round and play the winner of the first round match between host Oklahoma and Wichita State. The second round match is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET Saturday, May 11.
