Aug 23, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State men’s tennis head coach Jon Choboy announced the 2013-14 fall and spring schedules Friday. The Wolfpack is scheduled to participate in six tournaments throughout the fall before kicking off the dual season in early January.
The fall season will open with State participating in the Duke Fab Four Invitational, Sept. 13-15, at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The Pack will also send representatives to the UVA Ranked + 1, ITA All-American Championships, ITA Carolina Regionals, Alabama Invite and ITA National Indoors. Representatives from State will also compete as individuals at the Atlantic Tire Challenge, USA Futures – F28 in Birmingham, Ala., and the USA Futures - F2 in Sunrise, Fla.
The Wolfpack is slated to face 13 opponents throughout the spring that qualified for the 2013 NCAA Team Championships and will host 14 dual matches at home.
“We are very excited about another very challenging schedule,” Choboy said. “We believe our strength of schedule has really helped us move up to the top of the ACC standings. We will continue to play a top non-conference schedule.”
NC State will open the spring campaign on Jan. 8 against William & Mary, before traveling to Ft. Myers, Fla., to take part in the Illini Invitational. State will return home Jan. 18 to host UNC Greensboro and North Carolina Central in the first of three scheduled doubleheaders.
For the fourth straight season, the Pack will compete in the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend, which will be held Jan. 24-26. State will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., Jan. 24-26, where it will compete against host Tennessee, VCU and Michigan State for a trip to the ITA National Team Indoors Feb. 14-17 in Houston, Texas.
NC State will face three consecutive teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA Team Championships from Feb. 2-9, as the squad travels to Michigan before South Carolina and VCU come to Raleigh. The Wolfpack will wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule at home on March 7 with a doubleheader against Appalachian State and Winthrop.
The squad will open the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of the schedule at home on March 9 against Duke. Matches against UNC, Clemson and Notre Dame highlight the home ACC schedule. State will conclude the regular season with its final three matches on the road, including an April 11 tilt against reigning NCAA Champion Virginia.
The ACC Men’s Tennis Championship is scheduled to be played April 25-28 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
NC State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13, before falling to Oklahoma. State returns eight letterwinners from last season’s squad, including Austin Powell, Sean Weber and Thomas Weigel, who each compiled at least 20 singles victories to lead the team.
