RALEIGH, N.C. - Former NC State men's tennis standout James McGee earned his first career bid into a Grand Slam event, as he advanced through the qualifying stages and will compete in the singles main draw at this week's 2014 US Open.

McGee earned his way into the main draw after defeating Ze Zhang, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the third round of the qualifying stage. He will face Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan in Monday's first round of action.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, McGee competed as a key member of the Wolfpack's 2007 squad that advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, before earning All-ACC honors following his sophomore season in 2008.

McGee has won five future titles in his professional career and is currently Ireland's top-ranked player with a singles ranking of No. 195. He is currently coached by former Wolfpack teammate Nick Cavaday.
