Men's Tennis Kicks Off Fall Tournament Schedule
Sept. 15, 2011
RALEIGH, N.C. - The fall tournament season will begin Friday for four players on the NC State men's tennis team when they compete in the 2011 Duke Fab -4 Invitational at the Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park.
The Wolfpack contingent is one of 10 squads from the Southeast competing in the three-day event.
State will begin Friday at 9 a.m. with doubles competition as Matt Thomson and Ivan Sanchez Gomez take on Radford's third-seeded Nick Sayer and Thomas Dehaen in Group B1 play. At the same time, in Group B2, Dave Thomson and Sean Weber play Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Andrew Carter.
In singles play, Weber will face Kentucky's Anthony Rossi, Matt Thomson will play Alabama's Jarryd Botha, Gomez will play Elon's Andrew Precht and Dave Thomson will play Kentucky's Panav Jha. All of those matches begin at 1:30 p.m. The tournament features three singles flights (Blue, Black and White) and three doubles flights.
Quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, with the finals held Sunday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The Wolfpack will be without two-time All-ACC performer Jaime Pulgar, who is playing overseas this fall, but will send its top four players from summer skills workouts to the event.
"This is an excellent event to start off the season," said head coach Jon Choboy, who is entering his 10th season with the Wolfpack. "Generally, each of the teams will send its top four players this weekend. Each of our guys has earned this opportunity to go play in the event, and it's a good chance for them to play against good competition."
The other teams competing this weekend include the host Blue Devils, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Elon, William & Mary, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Radford and Louisville.
Pairing brackets are attached. All results will be posted on GoPack.com after the completion of each round.
