Stephens, Pulgar Advance at Wilson/ITA Regional
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Derek Stephens and freshman Jaime Pulgar both advancd to the main singles draw round of 64 at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Region Championship in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday, Oct. 17. The pair also advanced to the round of 16 in doubles play. Seniors Jay Weinacker and Christian Welte also advanced to the round of 32 in doubles. Play will continue throughout the weekend, and the final day is Oct. 20.
Stephens took down Grega Teraz (ETSU), 4-6, 6-2, 7-6, and Pulgar defeated Brian Fitzgerald (George Mason), 6-2, 7-6(8). Sophomore David Chermak fell to Daniel Knause (Furman), 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 128. Weinacker and Welte received first round byes and will begin singles play tomorrow.
Pulgar and Stephens also defeated Alejandro Espitia and Trey Jones (NC Central), 8-1, and then Patrick Daciek and Pedro Graber (Virginia Tech), 8-4, to advance to the round of 16. Weinacker and Welte teamed up to defeat Thibaut Charron and Emil Lindgren (VCU), 9-8(2), to advance to the round of 16 after a first round bye. Chermak and redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan also competed in doubles, but lost to Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut (FSU), 9-8(1).
