Tony Davis, a former NCAA champion and two-time All-American at Northern Iowa, joined the NC State wrestling staff this summer. Davis came to NC State from East Chicago (Ind.) Central High School, where he was the head wrestling coach. He previously served as the club wrestling coach for two years at the University of Nebraska and as conditioning coach at Northern Iowa following his graduation. At UNI, he worked with All-Americans Kyle Hanson and Paul Hynek. In his first year at NC State, he worked with ACC champions Kody Hamrah, Jeremy Colbert and Ryan Goodman, each of whom qualified for the 2006 NCAA Championships. As a competitive wrestler, Davis has known nothing but success. After winning the state championship at Mount Carmel (Ill.) High School, he won two junior college national championships at Iowa Central Community College, posting won-loss records of 33-4 as a freshman 134-pounder and 32-1 as a sophomore 142-pounder. In his first season at Northern Iowa, he went 19-4 and finished national runner-up at 149 pounds at the NCAA Championships. He atoned for his runner-up season by rolling to a 27-1 record and winning the national championship at 149 pounds as a senior in 2000. In his four years at Iowa Central and Northern Iowa, he compiled a won-lost record of 92-10 and won three national championships. He was named Northern Iowa's Outstanding Senior Athlete in 2000. Following his collegiate career, Davis embarked on a career at the international amateur level, and took fourth place at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials, followed by a fifth-place finish at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. He is a two-time U.S. Open place winner. Davis's career is well documented as a youth in Illinois, starting out with the Harvey Twisters wrestling program. He became the state's first five-time kids state champion. Currently ranked eighth at 74kg on the U.S. national team ladder, Davis will represent the Sunkist Kids. Davis also has participated in the Real Pro Wrestling circuit, wrestling at 145 pounds for the California Claw. The 28-year-old Davis graduated from Northern Iowa with a degree in physical education in 2001. He has three children: a son, Anthony, 7; a daughter, Navaeh, 4; and an infant daughter, Makalya Amari, born September 8, 2005. Davis lives in Raleigh with his wife, LaCresha. | |||||||||||
