The milestones and achievements just keep falling into place for Bob Guzzo as he enters his 30th season as NC State's head wrestling coach. With a 347-177-7 career record, Guzzo is the second winningest coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history, and closing fast on the top spot. Among current ACC wrestling coaches, Guzzo has won nearly 100 more matches than his closest competitor, and has a 111-49 overall mark against ACC opponents, including a 19-match ACC unbeaten streak from 1980-83. His teams have finished first in the conference's regular-season standings 11 times, and won 12 ACC Tournament championships. Under Guzzo's stewardship, the Pack has finished first in the ACC regular season and/or tournament 15 times in 29 years , posted four national top 10 finishes, and 11 top 20 finishes. Twelve times in the last 25 years, the Wolfpack has finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Tournament. Guzzo has had just two losing seasons in his 29 years at NC State. Individually, Guzzo's wrestlers have won 84 individual ACC championships, and earned All-America honors 24 times. Guzzo has had 20 of his wrestlers earn 27 All-America citations, while 13 have been named Outstanding Wrestler of the ACC Tournament and four have won national championships. In 1988, Scott Turner won the national title at 150 pounds and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the NCAA Championships, which is college wrestling's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. Matt Reiss won the NCAA crown at 167 as a freshman in 1980, and Tab Thacker bested all heavyweights in 1984. In 1993, Sylvester Terkay concluded a perfect 41-0 season with the NCAA championship at heavyweight. NC State has been nearly unbeatable in the ACC the last four years, winning two conference team championships, finishing first in the regular season three times, captuiring 14 individual ACC championships, and winning 15 of 20 dual matches against ACC opposition. Guzzo's teams have won 18 of their last 23 dual matches in the ACC. Guzzo has been recognized as the ACC Coach of the Year six times -- 1988, 1989, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2002 -- in the 18 years that the league has given that honor. Guzzo is widely respected throughout the country for his innovations and promotion of college wrestling. In 1981 at Columbus, Ohio, he coached the East team in the prestigious East-West All-Star Classic. In Guzzo's first season at NC State (1974-75), he led the Pack to a 12-5 record and was named the National Rookie Coach of the Year by Amateur Wrestling News. Guzzo attended East Stroudsburg (Pa.) State University, where he wrestled at 123 pounds. As a junior, the Easton, Pa., native was unbeaten, claimed the Pennsylvania State College championship and earned All-America honors. As a senior, Guzzo won the 1966 NAIA national championship at 123 pounds. He graduated in 1966 with a degree in health and physical education. Prior to coming to NC State, Guzzo coached wrestling and taught physical education for five years at the State University of New York at Canton. Guzzo lettered in wrestling, football and track at Wilson High School in Easton, twice winning district wrestling championships at 130 pounds. He won 10 varsity letters in all and served as team captain of three sports. Guzzo is married to the former Janis Fish of Easton, Pa. They have a nine-year-old daughter, Gina, and an eight-year-old daughter, Valerie. Guzzo also has a son (Robert) and daughter (Kristi) from a previous marriage. | |||||||||||
