PITTSBURGH, PA. - The Pack’s Tommy Gantt (157 pounds) and Nick Gwiazdowski (285) picked up victories at No. 19 Pittsburgh, but it was not enough as NC State fell in its first ACC dual of the season 27-7 Saturday night. NC State falls to 7-2 in duals this year, with both losses coming against ranked teams.
The dual started at 125 pounds, and Pittsburgh won each of the first three bouts by major decision to jump out to a 12-0 lead.
At 149 pounds, Mikey Racciato of Pittsburgh narrowly beat freshman Brian Hamann 15-13. The bout featured six lead changes, with Racciato scoring with 53 seconds left to take the lead for good.
The Pack notched its first win at 157 pounds by Gantt. The junior’s match clinching point came off an escape to start the second period and he erased 1:50 of ride time that was built up in the first period. Gantt improves to 6-1 in duals this year.
Pittsburgh came back and won the next four matches, all by decision, to increase the lead to 27-3.
The Pack closed out the dual with Gwiazdowski, a redshirt-sophomore, earning a 10-1 major decision over Pitt’s P.J. Tasser at 285 pounds. Gwiazdowski improves to a perfect 8-0 in duals this year.
The Pack will stay in Pittsburgh and compete in the Pitt Duals tomorrow. NC State will face Clarion at noon, Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m., and Seton Hill at 4 p.m.
