Boiling Springs, N.C. -
The NC State wrestling team improved its dual meet record to 3-0 after defeating Gardner Webb, 22-16, on Saturday in Paul Porter Arena. The Wolfpack and Bulldogs each won five matches, but State had the edge in the final point standings due to a major decision and two falls.
Junior Joe DeAngelo got the Wolfpack off to a great start, by recording a fall against Tyler Ziegler at 125. DeAngelo led 5-1, before getting the fall in the second period at 2:03. Sam Speno, wrestling in the 133-pound weight class, followed with a close 6-5 win to defeat Robbie Golde. Speno trailed 5-4 after two periods, but registered a takedown in the third frame to claim the victory.
At 141, freshman Tyler Hunt defeated Davante Andujar by fall at the 4:56 mark. Andujar jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but Hunt fought back to tie the score at 6-6 before the end of the first period. The South Plainfield, N.J. native took control of the match in the second period 12-6 lead before getting the fall.
Thomas Gantt, a junior at 149 pounds, recorded the lone major decision of the day for the Pack with his 19-8 decision over Ryan Medved. Gantt recorded several takedowns, but was unable to get the fall and won by major decision as a result.
After the first four bouts, NC State held a commanding 19-0 advantage, but Gardner Webb rebounded in the second half of the meet.
Matt Nereim dropped an 11-2 decision in his bout at 157 to Alex Medved. Nijel Jones wrestled after Nereim, posting a 7-2 win against Justin Guthrie. Jones held his opponent scoreless through the first two periods, but Guthrie registered two escapes in the final frame to prevent the shutout.
The Pack would not fare so well in its bouts at 174, 184, 197 and 285, as the Bulldogs were able to claim victories in all of those matches. Patrick Davis fell to Hunter Gamble at 174, 5-0, while Gray Jones of GWU took a 5-2 decision over Keegan Cerwinski at 184.
In the final two matches of the night, Bill Cook dropped a close 3-2 decision to Blake Salyer in the 197-pound division and Mike Kosoy fell to Travis Porter, 1-0 at 285.
