RALEIGH, N.C. -- Darrius Little and Matt Nereim got pins for NC State, but Virginia won eight of 10 bouts to take a 33-12 victory in the Wolfpack's Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
NC State dropped to 3-3 overall, 0-1 in the conference. The Cavaliers improved to 4-1 and 1-1.
In the first match of the evening, 20th-ranked 125-pounder Coltin Fought of the Wolfpack took down 11th-ranked Matt Snyder of Virginia just 17 seconds into the bout and rode him for the remainder of the first period, but Snyder took control in the second period and easily controlled the remainder of the match. Snyder took a 6-2 lead with a pair of near falls in the second period, then made it a 13-2 major decision with a takedown and two more near falls in the third.
The Cavaliers' Matt Nelson made it 8-0 with a 14-4 major decision over NC State's Ben Elliott at 133 pounds. Nelson had six takedowns, an escape and a point for advantage time.
The Wolfpack got on the board when 13th-ranked Darrius Little pinned Joe Martinez at the 1:35 mark at 141 pounds. Martinez is a 133-pounder who moved up a classification, and Little took him down with a throw, taking him straight to his back. The win lifted Little to 24-9 for the season and was the 88th victory of his career.
The Wolfpack took a 12-8 lead on Matt Nereim's sudden and stunning pin of Gus Sako at 149 pounds. Sako took Nereim down in the opening seconds of the match and immediately tlited him for a near fall. With another near fall and a point for stalling on Nereim, Sako led 10-0 after the first period, and then began the second period with an escape and a takedown, putting him within two points of a technical fall. Just when it appeared over, Nereim got a reversal a minute and a half into the period, then threw Sako to his back, pinning him at 5:16.
The Cavaliers got back in the win column at 157, tying the match at 12-12 on Jedd Moore's 12-3 major decision over Colton Palmer. Moore had a takedown, a reversal and a near fall.
After a brief intermission, Virginia's Nick Sulzer, ranked No. 15 at 165 pounds, put the Cavaliers ahead 16-12 with a 12-4 major decision over Nijel Jones. Virginia then took control of the team score when Vinny Waldhauser pinned Quinton Godley at the 2:42 mark at 174 pounds, giving UVa a 22-12 lead in the team score.
At 184 pounds, No. 18 Jon Fausey made four straight wins and an insurmountable 26-12 lead for the Cavaliers with a 13-5 major decision over Robert O'Neill, taking O'Neill down three times and reversing him twice. Ryan Malo made it 30-12 with a 13-4 major decision over KaRonne Jones at 197.
In the heavyweight bout, NC State moved freshman 197-pounder Harrison Honeycutt up a weight to take on Virginia's Ethan Hayes, and it was the only close match of the night, a 5-3 decision for Hayes, who had a takedown and a reversal.
NC State will return to action Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum with a 2 p.m. ACC match vs. Virginia Tech.
