RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State was unable to take advantage of standout performances by seniors Quinton Godley, Darrius Little, and Colton Palmer and went on to a 24-15 defeat at the hands of No. 15 Virginia Tech on Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack won three out of the first five bouts before surrendering the four of the last five.
With the lost the Wolfpack is 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Fifteenth-ranked Virginia Tech improved to 4-3 and 2-1.
Freshman 125-pound wrestler Coltin Fought helped the Wolfpack get off to a good start by defeating Ty Mitch 6-0. Fought was able to score first in his bout by escaping from a grapple hold. The Wolfpakc freshman secured a takedown to start the third period and extend his lead to 5-0. Fought scored one more point at the conslusion of the bout due to the advantage in riding time. With the win Fought now has 20 wins for the season to go with just five defeats.
The most anticipated bout of the day did not disappoint as two nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 13 Darrius Little and No. 9 Zach Neibert put on a great display of wrestling at 141 pounds. At the end of the frst period the score was dead even at 0-0 as niether wrestler was able to gain any ground on the other. Little got on the board first registering two escapes in the second period to jump out to a 2-0 lead to conclude the second period. Neibert scored his first and only points of the bout in the third period, but Little was able to hold off his comeback attempts and went on to record a 6-2 decision. The redshirt-senior is now tied with former Wolfpack wrestlers Joe Cesari, Mark Cesari, and Pierre Pryor in career victories with 89.
Wolfpack freshman Thomas Gantt was outdeuled by his counterpart from Virginia Tech, Nick Brascetta, at 149 pounds. Gantt battled Brascetta the entire bout, but was unable to gain any ground on Braschetta before being defeated by decision 11-5.
Redshirt-senior Colton Palmer dominated his bout at 157, pinning Matt Stephens at the 1:40 mark in the first period. Palmer scored early in the period with a two-point takedown to gain early leverage on his opponent before defeating him by fall. Palmer is now 12-8 on the season.
Nijel Jones came out with great intensity to begin his bout vs. Cameron Hurd at 165, scoring early and controlling the flow of the macth. Jones tallied four takedowns in the opening period to lead 8-2 at the end of the period. Hurd tightened the lead in the second period bringing the score to 10-7 at the close of the period. In the third stanza, Hurd was able to gain the lead and sustain it to defeat Jones in a heartbreaker, 13-12.
At 174, senior Quinton Godley defeated Chris Moon by decision 5-2. Godley gained the lead early in the opening period and never relinquished it before going on to defeat his opponent by decision. Moon was able to close the gap by scoring two points in the second period to tighten the score to 3-2, but in the final period Godley was able to hold off Moon's comeback efforts to secure the win.
The 184-pound bout had to be decided in overtime as freshman Wolfpack wrestler Robert O'Neill and John Dickson of Virginia Tech were all tied at the end of the third period 7-7. O'Neill led 5-3 after the second period but Dickson tied the score before the conclusion of regulation and sent the bout into overtime.
The Hokies won the final two bouts, getting a fall from Nick Vetterlein over KaRonne Jones and 197 pounds, and a 9-1 major decision from heavyweight Chris Penny over Wolfpack freshman Harrison Honeycutt.
The Wolfpack will return to action on Friday, January 20 in a non-conference road match at American University.
