RALEIGH, N.C. - Scott Garren got a pin and Zach Garren got a major decision that clinched the team victory Saturday as NC State defeated Maryland 32-3 in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match at Reynolds Coliseum.

The victory lifted the Wolfpack to 3-2 overall in dual-match competition, 2-0 and in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The match started with a high-scoring bout at 141 between NC State's Alex Hernandez and Maryland's Jason Gribschaw. Hernandez fell behind early in the first period and trailed 4-1 and 7-4, but a reversal late in the first period and a near fall early in the second propelled Hernandez to a 13-10 decision and a 3-0 team lead for NC State.

The Terps' Jerad Vellecco also jumped to an early, moving ahead 4-0 after a first-period takedown and near fall in the 149-pound match, but the Wolfpack's Jake Giamoni scored six unanswered points, and went on to record a 10-7 decision that gave the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead in the team score.

Scott Garren, ranked No. 14 nationally at 157 in the latest poll, never trailed in his bout with Luke Stauffer, building a 9-3 lead in the second period before pinning Stauffer at the 4:43 mark to make it 12-0, Wolfpack. Dustin Kawa then made it 16-0 with an easy 13-4 major decision over Maryland's John Antonelli.

Patrick Cissne got Maryland on the scoreboard with a 3-2 decision over Rick Brownlee at 174, but Daniel Humphries nearly pinned the Terps' Dan Scheets and came away with an 11-4 decision at 184 thanks to two reversals and a pair of three-point near falls. That gave the Wolfpack a 19-3 lead in the team scoring, and Zach Garren clinched the team win for the Pack with an 11-3 major decision over Jerry Afari at 197. That gave NC State a 23-3 lead with three bouts remaining.

Wolfpack freshman Jainor Palma defeated Barry Stein 7-4, putting the bout away with a reversal and a near fall early in the third period, and Jeremy Hartrum made it 29-3 in favor of NC State with a 3-2 decision over Maryland's Matt Pandullo.
