Raleigh, N.C. - Despite a fall from Matt Nereim at 157 pounds and a major decision by Tyler Hunt at 141 pounds, the NC State wrestling team fell to American Friday night in Reynolds Coliseum, 24-16. The dual meet was the first at home for the Pack this season, after NC State opened with three wins on the road last week.
The dual started at 285 pounds with American’s Blake Herrin picking up a 10-3 decision over the Pack’s Mike Kosoy. The Eagles then notched a victory at 125 pounds, when David Terao defeated Joe DeAngelo, 3-1, and American started the meet with a 6-0 lead.
NC State freshman Sam Speno got the Pack on the scoreboard at 133 pounds. He led from start to finish and scored an 8-6 win over Esteban Gomez-Rivera.
Another Pack freshman gave the Pack a 7-6 lead at 141 pounds, as Tyler Hunt earned a major decision over John Boyle, 10-1, to give NC State its first lead of the evening.
Both Speno and Hunt improved to a perfect 4-0 in duals this season.
The Eagles would regain the lead at 149 pounds, as Kevin Tao picked up a 7-3 decision over sophomore Thomas Gantt to give American a 9-7 advantage after five matches.
After the intermission, NC State junior Matt Nereim recorded his third fall of the season at 157 pounds, pinning Mark Cirello at the 3:11 mark to push the Pack in front 13-9.
The Eagles answered with back-to-back pins to capture a lead they did not surrender.
At 165 pounds, the Eagles’ Phillip Barriero recorded a pin of redshirt-freshman Mardel Gabriel at 6:42, then Keithen Cast followed suit with a pin of Pack junior Nijel Jones at 4:43 at 174 pounds. After the two pins, the Eagles held a 21-13 lead with two matches left.
