RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State wrestling team recorded a 19-16 win over North Carolina in an ACC dual Friday at Reynolds Coliseum. NC State used bonus point victories at 174 and 285 pounds and an upset win at 133 pounds clinched the match for the Pack. NC State improves to 12-4, while the Tar Heels fall to 5-9.

The dual started at 157 pounds with the two schools splitting the first four matches.

Junior Tommy Gantt, ranked 18th nationally, got the Pack on the scoreboard first with his 9-4 decision. Gantt improves to 12-1 in duals this year, including winning his last eight.

At 165, senior Nijel Jones dropped a close 3-1 decision as the dual was tied 3-3 after two bouts.

Freshman Pete Renda notched the Pack's first bonus point win of the night, as he scored a 12-3 major decision at 174 pounds. Renda, ranked 20th nationally, improves to 14-1 in duals this year having won six straight.

UNC crept back to within a point with a 6-3 decision at 184 pounds.

NC State got the three points back at 197 pounds when redshirt senior KaRonne Jones recorded a 7-3 decision. Jones has now won back-to-back ACC matches after his upset of No. 22 Chris Penny of Virginia Tech last weekend.

At the halfway point, it was NC State up 10-6.

NC State got much needed bonus points at 285 pounds, as redshirt-sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski recorded his 14th pin of the year just 1:03 into the match. Gwiazdowski improves to 30-2 overall and 15-0 in duals this year.

UNC closed the gap to 16-10 after a major decision at 125 pounds.

NC State got what ended up being the decisive points when freshman Chris Wilkes upset No. 30 Troy Heilmann 7-2 at 133 pounds. The Pack was up nine points going into the final two bouts, and without a UNC pin the Pack ended up with the win regardless of the final two bouts.

The Tar Heels did record decisions at 141 pounds (7-0) and 149 pounds (2-0), but the Pack clinched with Wilkes' win at 133 pounds.

NC State will host its final home dual of the season next weekend, as No. 13 Virginia visits Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.
