Wolfpack Drops Heart Breaker to Tar Heels
Feb. 3, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C.-- NC State wrestling dropped a heart breaker on senior night, falling to the North Carolina Tar Heels, 20-18.
“I feel bad for the seniors, because this group has worked really hard,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said.
With the loss, the Wolfpack are now 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels improve to 3-13 overall and 2-3.
Redshirt Senior Darrius Little, ranked 10th nationally, did not let the emotions of senior day affect him and defeated Evan Henderson by decision, 8-3. Little scored first in the match with a takedown and never trailed en route to his 29th win on the season. He is now just one win shy of becoming the 13th wrestler in school history to have a 30 win season. Little remains perfect in dual matches this season at 11-0. The redshirt senior now has 93 career victories and has won ten consecutive matches.
At 149, Wolfpack sophomore Matt Nereim strategically wore down his opponent, Jon Burns, and pinned him in the third period with 14 seconds remaining in the bout. Nereim and Burns traded points throughout the match as neither wrestler was able to keep the other from scoring. At the end of the first bout the score was dead even at 5, but Nereim would grab the lead in the second period and lead 8-7 after the second period. A great reversal in the third period by Nereim led to the pin. Nereim’s pin gave the Wolfpack a great lift, putting the team ahead of the Tar Heels 15-14.
“Nereim gave us a big lift with the pin and that’s just how he wrestles and who he is,” said Jordan.
Freshman Coltin Fought got the Wolfpack on the board with a great display of wrestling, pinning his opponent Josh Craig in the first period. Fought started the match with great energy and continued with it until registering the pin at 2:13. Before getting the pin, Fought was ahead 7-0 having registered a takedown and a near fall in the bout.
Senior Quinton Godley took advantage of his opportunity to secure a win in his last match at Reynolds defeating Alex Utley by decision 7-1. The Wolfpack wrestler dominated the match and did not allowing his opponent to score until the third period. Godley led 3-0 after the first and 5-0 after the second period. With the win Godley is now 25-11 on the season.
Redshirt senior Colton Palmer suffered a tough lost in his bout at 157 against No. 17 Corey Mock, falling by a 4-0 decision. Palmer wrestled hard against Mock, but was not able to overcome the deficit.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead getting major decisions from Thomas Ferguson and Zac Bennett over Robert O’Neill and KaRonne Jones, at 184 and 197 respectively. Frank Abbondanza of UNC followed with a win over Wolfpack freshman Josh Davis at heavyweight.
The Wolfpack will return to action on the road at Old Dominion at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 9.
