NC State Wrestlers Lose Heartbreaker To North Carolina, 20-16
Feb. 11, 2006
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State wrestling team dug out of an early eight-point deficit to battle back within one point of rival North Carolina, but the Tar Heels earned the deciding victory in the heavyweight bout to defeat the Wolfpack, 20-16 Saturday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack (10-5-1, 2-2-1 ACC) fell behind, 6-0, early after UNC's Bobby Shaw pinned Jeremy Hartrum at 6:25 in the 125-pound bout. NC State would cut that lead in half with a 4-3 victory by Garrett Cummings, but a technical fall win by Carolina's Vincent Ramirez at 141 pounds would give the Tar Heels an eight point advantage.
Freshman Joe Caramanica answered back with a major decision win for NC State at 149 pounds and 157-pound Kody Hamrah added three more points for the Wolfpack after a 5-2 decision. The Tar Heels picked up two more decisions at 165 and 174 before NC State could respond with a 12-7 victory by Jeremy Colbert at 184 pounds, and an 8-4 win by Ryan Goodman at 197. With those wins, the Wolfpack would cut the lead down to 17-16 heading into the heavyweight bout, but an early takedown by Carolina's Spencer Nadolsky helped earn a 3-2 decision victory in the final bout.
With the win, North Carolina improves to 15-8-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the ACC.
