RALEIGH, N.C.-- NC State wrestling split a doubleheader on Sunday, dropping the first match to Indiana 31-19 before defeating VMI 36-12 in the second match. The Wolfpack recorded two falls, two technical falls, and three major decisions to highlight the performance on the day.

In the first match, NC State squared off against Indiana and led halfway through the match before surrendering the lead in the last half of the match. Freshman Coltin Fought got the Wolfpack off to a great start with a technical fall over Zachary Zimmer of Indiana, 15-0. Fought dominated his bout and did not allow Zimmer to score before the match was ended in the second period because of the tech. fall at 4:05.

The Wolfpack dropped the next two matches at 133 and 141, but rebounded with its second tech. fall of the match when sophomore Matt Nereim defeated Geno Capezio 18-3. Redshirt senior Colton Palmer was not to be outdone and defeated Sawyer Morris by fall. Palmer registered a takedown in the opening seconds and over-powered Morris for the pin just 32 seconds into the match.

"I'm really proud of the way we wrestled," said Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan. "We were more aggressive and fundamentally sound. Things that we worked on in practice, the guys came out and executed today."

At 165, Nijel Jones dropped a heart-breaker to Preston Keiffer as the match was tied at 9 apiece at the end of the match, but due to the advantage in riding time Keiffer got the win. Senior Quinton Godley's bout at 174 was the only match that pitted two ranked opponents against each other. Godley is ranked 30th nationally and LeBlanc is 23rd. The Wolfpack senior would prevail in the match and defeat LeBlanc by decision 5-4.

State held the lead 19-13 after the seventh bout, but Indiana would reclaim the lead after getting three pins in the last three matches at 184, 197, and heavyweight.

The Pack held its own in the second match of the day knocking off VMI, 36-12. The Pack won eight of 10 bouts against the Keydets to claim the victory.

Freshman Coltin Fought moved into the history books with his win at 125, as he is now fourth in school history for most victories by a freshman. Fought now has a record of 24-8 on the year.  Another freshman Ben Elliott had one of his strongest performances of the year, defeating Joe Jarrells of VMI by major decision 15-1 at 133. Elliott was only one point away from getting a tech. fall which would have ended the match.

"Everybody wrestled really hard from top to bottom and we also wrestled intelligently," coach Jordan said.

The Wolfpack would get another major decision from sophomore Matt Nereim at 149 defeating David Yost of VMI, 10-0. The match remained scoreless after the first period, but Nereim quickly registered an escape to start the second period. At the end of the second period the score was 6-0, and Nereim would add four more points to his score in the third.

Redshirt senior Colton Palmer, who battled flu-like symptoms before the Wolfpack's last match on Thursday and did not wrestle, picked up his second fall of the day pinning Edward Gottwald. Palmer's second pin of the day took slightly longer than his first, but was still recorded in the first period as Gottwald was pinned just one minute and 21 seconds into the match.

"Colton's pin was big after he was sick Thurdsday and couldn't compete," said Jordan. "I was real happy with his performance out there today."

Pack wrestler Nijel Jones dominated his match at 165 against Jon Jones of VMI, registering six takedowns and a near fall. Nijel Jones won the match by major decision 18-8.

Senior Quinton Godley, ranked No. 30 nationally, faced a ranked opponent for the second time on Sunday when he wrestled Matthew Brock of VMI who is ranked No. 33. The match was tied at two at the end of regulation and had to be decided in overtime, where Godley claimed the victory 4-2.

State wrestler Robert O'Neill won by forfeit in his match at 184. Junior KaRonne Jones followed with a 10-3 decision over Urayoan Garcia. VMI would get its second win in the match with a fall by Alan Embree over Josh Davis

"We looked really good today, but we have to keep it going and build on it for next week and then the following weeks," said Jordan.

The Wolfpack will travel to Duke on Friday February 17 for a double header against the host team Duke and Ohio. The match versus Duke will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the match versus Ohio at 8 p.m.
