Goodman's Season Comes To An End, NC State Exits NCAA Wrestling Championships
March 17, 2006
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - NC State will have to wait another year for an All-American. All hopes for this season were dashed when the Wolfpack's last remaining competitor, Ryan Goodman, was eliminated in the morning session on Friday.
Goodman seemed to be in control of his 197-pound consolation bout, holding a 4-3 lead with just over a minute remaining in the match. He had just forced a stalling warning on his opponent Darren Burns, but seconds later Burns took advantage of Goodman's aggressiveness. Burns caught Goodman extended on a shot and put in a three-quarter nelson to earn a takedown and three near-falls points. Goodman then trailed 8-4 with less than a minute left in the match. Goodman did earn a stalling point against Burns, but he could not escape from the bottom and suffered an 8-5 defeat.
Prior to the late action, Goodman held a 2-1 lead after the first period by taking down Burns and then allowing Burns to escape. After being ridden for almost the entire second period Goodman earned a reversal and then gave up an escape to make the score 4-2 after two periods. Burns earned an early third-period escape to cut Goodman's lead to 4-3 and set up the match's dramatic ending.
