NC State Wrestling Takes Controversial Victory Over Appalachian State, 17-16
Nov. 10, 2001
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State won three major decisions and overcame a one-point team penalty to defeat Appalachian State 17-16 in college wrestling Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum. The match was the first of the season for both teams.
In a battle of the defending champions from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southern Conference, each team won five individual bouts. In addition to taking three major decisions to one for Appalachian State, the Wolfpack overcame a one-point team penalty and succeeded in having another overturned.
The match started off with the Mountaineers bolting to a 6-0 lead when P.J. Boccia defeated Kevin Gabrielson 3-2 at 157 pounds, and Mark Fee upset 14th-ranked Pierre Pryor 12-7 at 165. The Wolfpack then reeled off three straight major decisions to take a 12-6 lead. Dustin Kawa beat Lee Roper 12-4 at 174, Jon Godwin routed Jerome Davis 18-5 at 184, and Jason Gore beat Mark Hobbs 12-4 at 197. NC State heavyweight Ngozi Collins then defeated Geoff McIntosh 8-4 to give the Wolfpack a 15-6 lead after six bouts.
At that point, NC State was incorrectly penalized a team point when Clarence Davis reported for the 125-pound bout with a long fingernail after being warned before the match. That, however, proved to be a misapplication of the rule, which calls for the offending team to be penalized an injury timeout and not a team point. The point was given back to NC State following the completion of the match.
Appalachian State's Richard Caisse defeated Davis in a 15-5 major decision to make the team score 15-10, but the scoreboard incorrectly showed the score at 14-10. That became critical one match later when Ryan McCallum was penalized another team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after losing a 3-1 decision to Travis Drake. McCallum's loss made the team score 14-13, but the scoreboard incorrectly showed a tie at 13-13.
The two teams split the final two bouts, with NC State's Jake Giamoni defeating Eric Burns 12-5, and Appalachian State's David Brunson beating Dave Miller 8-2. The scoreboard incorrectly showed the final score at 16-16, but after a protracted and often-heated discussion at the scorer's table, the team point from the Davis match was awarded back to NC State, giving the Wolfpack a 17-16 victory.
The controversy turned out to be a moot point. A tie bout is determined on criteria, and the Wolfpack would have won anyway by virtue of having won three major decisions to Appalachian State's one.
