NC State Wrestling Downs Campbell 32-9

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - NC State captured seven of 10 bouts, four of them by fall, to earn a 32-9 win over Campbell in wrestling action Wednesday night in Buies Creek. The dual meet was the first for both teams this season.
In the opening match of the night at 125-pounds, NC State's Jeff Breese opened up an early 8-2 lead over CU's Andy Bricker, but Bricker rallied back and outscored Breese 9-3, tying the match up with just one minute left in the match. Neither man scored in the overtime, and Bricker was awarded the match on the strength of riding time.
At 133-pounds, the Wolfpack's Dan Pacitti scored a two-point takedown in the opening minute of the match and tacked on a single point in the closing minutes to pick up a 3-2 win over Jordan Henning.
NC State was deducted one team point for unsportsman like conduct after the match, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Camels.
NC State's Alex Hernandez jumped out to a 7-1 lead by the end of the second period over Adam Bricker in the 141-pound bout, and cruised to an 8-4 win that gave the Pack a 5-3 lead. The Wolfpack's senior trio of Jake Giamoni, Scott Garren and Dustin Kawa followed with back-to-back-to-back pins to put the match away.
At a 149 pounds, Giamoni built a 23-6 lead over Elliot Berger before pinning him at the 5:19 of the match, making the score 11-3 in favor of NC State. The Wolfpack extended its lead to 17-3 when Garren pinned Jeff Lyons 2:09 into the 157-pound match. Kawa led Campbell's Josh Kalafchi 14-4 late in the 165-pound match, and was eventually able to pick up the pin at 6:18, making the score 23-3.
A back and forth battle took place at a 174 pounds. NC State's Mike Waite took and early 2-0 lead before the Camels' Brian Hocum cut it to 2-1 at the end of the first period. The two exchanged points before Waite took a 6-5 advantage in the final period. Hocum tied the match on an escape with 1:55 remaining in the match.
With 40 seconds remaining in the bout, Waite took down Hocum to gain the 8-6 advantage. Hocum cut the lead to 8-7 with 7.9 seconds left, but could not tie the score, allowing the Wolfpack to go up 29-3 in the team scoring.
Campbell picked up its second win of the night in the 184-pound bout when Lantz Nixon opened the match with a quick two-point takedown of Daniel Humphries, and then saw his lead grow to 11-2. Nixon finally took the match 13-6, cutting the NC State lead to 29-6.
The Wolfpack took its fourth pin of the night when freshman Zach Garren, Scott's younger brother, pinned Brandon Miller at 1:34 of the 197-pound match, making the scored 32-6, Wolfpack.
After a scoreless first period of the heavyweight bout, Campbell's Dennis Campbell was called for stalling and NC State's Janior Palma was awarded a 1-0 lead with 22 seconds remaining in the second period. Campbell tied the scored just seven seconds later.
Each wrestler gained two points in the final period, with Campbell tying the score in the final two seconds, leaving the match tied at 3-3 at the end regulation. Neither wrester scored in the first overtime. Palma scored a one-point escape with just three seconds remaining in the second overtime to force a third extra period.
In the third overtime Campbell scored two, two-point takedowns to go onto the 7-5 win.
