    Reno, Nev. -

The NC State wrestling team headed west this weekend, and competed in the Reno Tournament of Champions. The Wolfpack had five of its nine wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals, and a Pack wrestler won the 165-pound weight class and also had a pair finish third at both 133 and 149 pounds.

Junior Nijel Jones came in ranked 20th in the nation and he was the top seed at 165. Jones had his best tournament of the fall, as he brought home a first place finish going a perfect 6-0. Jones recorded falls in two of his first three matches, sandwiched around a 7-1 win to ease into the quarterfinals. Jones then used a 14-8 win to advance to the semifinals and 6-3 to reach second finals in four tournaments this year. In the championship, Jones recorded a 13-4 major decision over Nick Proctor for the tittle at 165.

Freshman Sam Speno brought home a third place finish at 133 pounds. Speno won his first three matches (7-6, 8-5, 6-0) before losing in the semifinals to the top-seed, Ryan Mango of Stanford, a two-time All-American. Speno recovered with an 8-1 win over 16th ranked Ian Nickell of Cal State Bakersfield and then downed Brandon Fifield of Michigan State, 3-0, to capture third place.

Sophomore Thomas Gantt made his season debut, and finished third at 149 pounds. Gantt also started out with three straight wins (4-0, 8-3, 3-1), with his first win of 4-0 over 19th-ranked Justin Gonzalez. Gantt lost in the semifinals to third ranked Jason Chamberlain of Boise State forcing him into the wrestleback bracket. Gantt picked up a 12-5 win and then defeated Jimmy Eggemeyer of Southern Oregon (3-1) for the second time on the day to finish in third place.
