CHARLESTON, S.C. -- NC State and The Citadel finished their dual match tied at 18-18 Saturday, but the tiebreaking criteria gave the winning point to the Bulldogs, who prevailed 19-18 by virtue of having more falls or technical falls in the match.
Darrius Little defeated Jordan Dix at 141 pounds, the final match of the afternoon, to lift NC State into the 18-18 tie. Both teams won five matches in the dual, but The Citadel got a pin in the heavyweight match to take the tiebreaker.
The Wolfpack (0-1) got major decisions from sophomore Nijel Jones at 165 pounds, and from freshmen Robert O'Neill at 184 and Coltin Fought at 125. Andrew Delaney offset those extra points, however, with a fall for the Bulldogs (1-3) at heavyweight.
Little improved to 15-8 for the season with his decision over Dix. Little now is 77-53 for his career and is tied with Joe Lidowski (1977-80) for 16th in school history for career victories.
Fought's 19-6 rout of junior Richard Alcaron lifted the Wolfpack freshman's record to 13-3. He has won 10 of his last 11 matches. Nijel Jones lifted his record to 15-7 with his 12-1 victory over Michael Harper, and O'Neill upped his record to 9-7 by taming John Duane 19-8.
Sophomore Matt Nereim got the Pack's other victory, a 7-6 decision in overtime over David Ivashchenko at 149 pounds, the first bout of the dual. Nereim improved to 10-6 for the season.
NC State will now take the next two weeks off before returning to action Jan. 1-2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
