CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.Darrius Little defeated 10th-ranked Nick Dardanes of Minnesota 7-3 on Sunday to advance to the 141-pound semifinals at the Southern Scuffle, which is taking place Sunday and Monday in Chattanooga’s McKenzie Arena.

Little pinned Connor Hanafee of Army in the first round and then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 decision over Penn State’s Bryan Pearsall. By winning his first three bouts of the tournament, Little became just the 13th wrestler in the history of the NC State program to reach the 80-win plateau for his career. He is 80-53 with 11 pins in his three-plus seasons with the Wolfpack. He is 18-8 this season and will face Missouri’s Nicholas Hucke in Monday’s semifinals, which are slated to begin at 11 a.m. local time.

“That’s a big breakthrough win for Darrius,” head coach Carter Jordan said. “He’s had matches like that in the past and just hadn’t been able to get over the hump, but he wrestled a great match [vs. Dardanes] today, followed the game plan, and was in control of the match.”

Freshman 125-pounder Coltin Fought also advanced to wrestle on Monday. Fought won his first two matches — 14-4 over Gabriel Ramos of Ohio University and 16-5 over Brian Bokoski of North Carolina — before being buzzsawed by third-ranked Alan Waters of Missouri, 10-0 in the quarterfinals.

Fought, who improved to 15-4, will take on Cornell’s Bricker Dixon in the consolation rounds when action resumes on Monday. That round of the wrestlebacks is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. local time. Little and Fought are the lone two NC State wrestlers still alive for Monday’s action at the Southern Scuffle.

“I’m very pleased with Darrius and Coltin,” Jordan said. “I know the score was 10-0, but you never got the feeling that it was a blowout. Coltin competed hard, but [Alan Waters] is just on another level right now. As for the rest of our team, we are what we are right now. We have a bunch of young guys in the lineup and our heavyweight, Eloheim Palma, is out for the year. Some of those guys wrestled well and will be better for the experience. A few of them just had a disappointing day.”
