Wrestling Falls To Maryland 21-18 In First of Two At Reynolds

RALEIGH, N.C. Maryland heavyweight Patrick Gilmore carried a 3-1 lead into the third period and withstood several attempts at takedowns by NC State’s Bobby Isola to hand Isola a 3-2 decision and lift Maryland to a 21-18 victory in the first match of a college wrestling doubleheader Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.

With Gilmore clinging to a 3-2 lead in the third period, Isola took repeated shots and just missed takedowns twice as the two wrestlers went out of bounds before hitting the mat. Gilmore was warned for stalling, but Isola was unable to score after escaping to begin the final period.

The loss dropped NC State to 3-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland improved to 5-7-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.

Maryland won the first two bouts to take a 6-0 lead in the team scoring. Brendan Byrne defeated Mike Moreno 8-1 at 125 pounds, and eighth-ranked Steven Bell took a tough 3-2 decision over Darrius Little at 133. Bell improved to 17-3 for the season with the decision. Little fell to 10-12.

The key bout of the afternoon was probably Alex Krom’s 9-3 decision over the Wolfpack’s Joe Caramanica in the 141-pound match. Krom, ranked No. 13 nationally, got a takedown and a near fall early in the first period and never was challenged in improving to 13-4. Krom led 4-1 after the first period and 6-1 after the second. Caramanica, who fell to 10-2 with the loss, came into the bout ranked No. 15. That gave Maryland a 9-0 lead in the team scoring.

Darrion Caldwell got the Pack on the scoreboard by pinning Dex Lederer at the 2:24 mark at 149 pounds. Lederer caught Caldwell early in the bout with a single but was uable to score. Caldwell took Lederer down midway through the period and wasted little time taking him to his back with a cradle move. The win improved the third-ranked Caldwell to 27-0 on the season. The pin was his 14th of the season and the 47th of his career. Lederer is now 10-9.

Kody Hamrah gave NC State a short-lived lead with a 12-4 major decision over Kyle John at 157 pounds. Hamrah got a takedown with seven seconds left in the bout to turn the decision into a major. Hamrah improved to 23-6 with the win. Johns dropped to 10-13.

With the Wolfpack leading 10-9, the Terps’ Brian Letters took a 4-0 decision over Ray Ward at 165 pounds. The bout was scoreless through two periods, with Letters riding Ward out through the entire second period. Letters, who improved to 16-8, got an escape to start the third, then took Ward down late and did not let him back up. That put Maryland back in front at 12-10. Ward dropped to 3-6 with the defeat.

NC State retook the lead with Jake Burge’s 19-4 technical fall over Patrick Klenkel at 174 pounds. Leading 7-1 entering the final period, the two wrestlers started the period in the neutral position, and Burge took Klenkel down with a headlock throw, taking Klenkel straight to his back for a three-point near fall. Burge took Klenkel down three more times in the period and got the technical fall with the point for advantage time. Burge improved to 13-7 with the win. Klenkel fell to 4-11.

Burge’s tech fall put NC State back in front at 15-12 heading into the final three bouts of the afternoon, and at 184, Mark Jahad (2-7) got four takedowns and an escape to hand Bradley Nielson a 10-5 defeat and make it 18-12 in favor of the Pack. Nielson fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Hudson Taylor, Maryland’s 10th-ranked 197-pounder, won by forfeit to tie the score at 18-18 and set the stage for Gilmore's victory over Isola at heavyweight.
