RALEIGH, N.C. - The Pack sent seven of its redshirting wrestlers to compete in the Newberry Open on Saturday. Of the seven that competed, four won their weight class while another finished second.
At 125 pounds, senior Joe DeAngelo claimed his third tournament win in six tries this season. DeAngelo posted back-to-back falls to start, then won 8-1 in the semifinals and 10-3 in the championship bout.
NC State had the top two finishers at 141 pounds. Freshman Beau Donahue won his first tournament of his Wolfpack career, as he downed classmate Jake DeAngelo 2-1 (TB1) in the championship bout. Donahue earned a 16-1 technical fall win to reach the championship bout, while DeAngelo tallied three pins in his four wins to get to the finals.
Freshman Chad Pyke claimed his second tournament win of the season at 157 pounds, winning 7-5 in the championship bout. Sophomore Mike Kosoy also won his second tournament, as he registered a technical fall and three pins en route to his championship at 285 pounds.
Freshmen Rodney Shepard (157) and Mikey Amorando (165) both went 2-2 in their respective weight classes.
