Wrestling Overcomes UNC Greensboro, 21-18
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Trailing 18-12 with two matches remaining Thursday night, NC State got a pin from Ryan Goodman at 197 to tie the match and a 3-2 decision from heavyweight Jainor Palma to pin a come-from-behind defeat on UNC Greensboro in college wrestling action at Fleming Gymn on the UNCG campus.
The win was NC State’s fifth in a row and its 10th in its last 13 dual matches. UNCG dropped to 8-4 with the loss.
The two squads split the first two matches, with UNCG’s Jeff Hedges defeating Taylor Cummings by a major decision, 9-0, and the Wolfpack’s Garrett Cummings winning a regular decision over Mitchell Johnson, 10-7.
That left the Spartans with a 4-3 lead in the team scoring, and UNCGs’ Chris Bencivenga made is 7-3 with a wild 15-12 decision over
NC State (11-7) responded with a technical fall at 149 pounds by Joe Caramanica to take the lead at 8-7.
Kody Hamrah’s 12-1 major decision over Nathan Beryman at 157 pounds pushed the Wolfpack lead to 12-7. Caramanica improved to 15-8 with the technical fall, his third of the season. After a stretch of four losses in a span of five matches, Caramanica now has won three in a row. Hamrah, meanwhile, won his fourth in a row and his 12th in the 13 matches.
At 165, Mark Ring put UNCG cut the lead to 12-10 with a tough 8-5 decision over Obie Simpson, and Joe Lowe gave the Spartans the lead at 15-12 after recording a technical fall over Randy Goodman at 174. UNCG’s Kane Smith extended the Spartan lead to 18-12 with two matches to go after taking a 4-1 decision over Jeremy Colbert at 184 pounds.
Goodman, ranked No. 16 nationally, wasted no time in pinning Nick Clark in 1:15 at 197 to tie it the match at 18-18, setting the stage for heavyweights Palma and Joe Sheffield to settle the final outcome. Palma recorded an escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead going into the third. Sheffield tied the match up at one apiece after earning an escape, but Palma recorded a a takedown in the final minute of the match to top Sheffield 3-2 and gave the Wolfpack the 21-18 victory.
